<br />
I have been making dog collars for my three pups for a couple of years. I've made them for gifts, other dog-family members, and auction donations.<br />
<br />
It's about time I shared the "how-to" for making your own!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OdxnpmCnEhM/XI5YTz2D8WI/AAAAAAAA-E0/6i95KpJGFOAGB5LGYhdGqTwfmQgjU6mHgCLcBGAs/s1600/dog%2Bcollar%2Bcover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="916" data-original-width="916" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OdxnpmCnEhM/XI5YTz2D8WI/AAAAAAAA-E0/6i95KpJGFOAGB5LGYhdGqTwfmQgjU6mHgCLcBGAs/s640/dog%2Bcollar%2Bcover.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I will add resources and advice at the bottom of the blog post.<br />
<br />
You will need:<br />
<br />
dog collar hardware kit<br />
4 x 36 inches of fabric<br />
1/4 yard SF 101 interfacing<br />
1" webbing, if desired<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-seoG96wLmu0/XI5Y2HQCzuI/AAAAAAAA-E8/HJjNrveAXHQ7h54DzMv0pZNegI08WpCBgCLcBGAs/s1600/dog%2Bcollar%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="916" data-original-width="672" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-seoG96wLmu0/XI5Y2HQCzuI/AAAAAAAA-E8/HJjNrveAXHQ7h54DzMv0pZNegI08WpCBgCLcBGAs/s400/dog%2Bcollar%2B1.jpg" width="292" /></a></div>
<br />
Cut your fabric and the SF 101 into 4" strips. For a large dog collar (retriever, lab, pit), cut 34" long, for a medium collar (labradoodle, springer spaniel), 31" long, and for a small dog (terrier, beagle), 28" long. Adhere the SF-101 to the fabric according to the manufacturer's instructions. If not using webbing, use two layers of SF-101. I leave about an inch un-interfaced at the end to allow for easier insertion into the hardware. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P44HD4rlpFQ/XI5Y5UEaksI/AAAAAAAA-Fg/g224k0fmnb8tO6K6Uqxw0CLh-jxNd2rUQCLcBGAs/s1600/dog%2Bcollar%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="915" data-original-width="780" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P44HD4rlpFQ/XI5Y5UEaksI/AAAAAAAA-Fg/g224k0fmnb8tO6K6Uqxw0CLh-jxNd2rUQCLcBGAs/s400/dog%2Bcollar%2B4.jpg" width="340" /></a></div>
<br />
Fold the collar in half, then bring the long edges to the middle. Iron in place. The resulting collar should be 1" wide. If not using webbing, edge stitch along each edge 1/8". <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eCJD6nfq_04/XI5Y5wyto_I/AAAAAAAA-Fk/xM6c8u-VzCYbfJJwbgE4j86Ldk9vYJJGQCLcBGAs/s1600/dog%2Bcollar%2B5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="915" data-original-width="1214" height="241" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eCJD6nfq_04/XI5Y5wyto_I/AAAAAAAA-Fk/xM6c8u-VzCYbfJJwbgE4j86Ldk9vYJJGQCLcBGAs/s320/dog%2Bcollar%2B5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
If desired, you can make your collar sturdier by using cotton or nylon webbing. Cut the webbing about an inch less than the collar. Using Wonder Clips, place the folded un-stitched collar on top ot the webbing. Edge stitch 1/8" along each end, leaving one end with no webbing attached. <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-b5APRCon8Sw/XI5Y6d7SUZI/AAAAAAAA-Fo/Qnl53jTeLuAB-q6-1hRITRBg1tVHcGnKwCLcBGAs/s1600/dog%2Bcollar%2B6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="915" data-original-width="663" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-b5APRCon8Sw/XI5Y6d7SUZI/AAAAAAAA-Fo/Qnl53jTeLuAB-q6-1hRITRBg1tVHcGnKwCLcBGAs/s400/dog%2Bcollar%2B6.jpg" width="288" /></a></div>
<br />
I will Scotchguard my collar at this point to attempt to keep it looking clean - my two big dogs are crazy and play like manics, so our collars take a lot of abuse! I just tried Odi-Coat on a couple that I am putting together, so I will let you know if that works out.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q7CYGmXbINA/XI5Y69kyUtI/AAAAAAAA-Fs/UxzgwwQRSIE9OkbBoJ9KY5yeqx5pR5_0ACLcBGAs/s1600/dog%2Bcollar%2B7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="915" data-original-width="633" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q7CYGmXbINA/XI5Y69kyUtI/AAAAAAAA-Fs/UxzgwwQRSIE9OkbBoJ9KY5yeqx5pR5_0ACLcBGAs/s320/dog%2Bcollar%2B7.jpg" width="221" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j5WTSxISAPc/XI5dDFoh3wI/AAAAAAAA-Gc/Adw_qlQpd0E_AKNYrb-eM5aWRvP2cjwegCLcBGAs/s1600/dog%2Bcollar%2Bstart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="916" data-original-width="918" height="397" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j5WTSxISAPc/XI5dDFoh3wI/AAAAAAAA-Gc/Adw_qlQpd0E_AKNYrb-eM5aWRvP2cjwegCLcBGAs/s400/dog%2Bcollar%2Bstart.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Even though I've made a bunch of collars, I always have to refer to a finished collar to remind myself where I start! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3NTvVEdGeK0/XI5e8iiGKdI/AAAAAAAA-G8/3KxkwuQCGtwsHixvfwKbLFa1Ats2IrDtACLcBGAs/s1600/dog%2Bcollar%2B17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="916" data-original-width="559" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3NTvVEdGeK0/XI5e8iiGKdI/AAAAAAAA-G8/3KxkwuQCGtwsHixvfwKbLFa1Ats2IrDtACLcBGAs/s640/dog%2Bcollar%2B17.jpg" width="390" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
This is the order in which you will use the hardware. Take the end of the collar (not the one without the interfacing/webbing at the end) and loop it through piece number 1. Referring to the finished collar photo, have the short end of the collar about 3 inches away from the buckle. Stitch in place per the photo below. Stitch a one inch square, and stitch an "x" across the opposite sides. Fray check the raw edges.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rYNz7XvjVbg/XI5Y2PbzwLI/AAAAAAAA-FA/SOqw1LdesZgxniA08cafbNEFFmx8ALODQCLcBGAs/s1600/dog%2Bcollar%2B10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="915" data-original-width="1452" height="401" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rYNz7XvjVbg/XI5Y2PbzwLI/AAAAAAAA-FA/SOqw1LdesZgxniA08cafbNEFFmx8ALODQCLcBGAs/s640/dog%2Bcollar%2B10.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Slide the small rectangle (piece #2) onto the long end of the collar. Then, slide piece #3 onto the collar. The curved edge should face outward; you put the collar into the bottom of piece #3, then out the top of piece #3. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IdNwPOVG_Lg/XI5Y2Ge54YI/AAAAAAAA-FE/etDSqUanK8s2Sbc2mgl8JLYCrxA8cEXXgCLcBGAs/s1600/dog%2Bcollar%2B11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="840" data-original-width="1600" height="336" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IdNwPOVG_Lg/XI5Y2Ge54YI/AAAAAAAA-FE/etDSqUanK8s2Sbc2mgl8JLYCrxA8cEXXgCLcBGAs/s640/dog%2Bcollar%2B11.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Pull the collar end through piece number two.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NSzMXn80GfA/XI5Y2Ys-wJI/AAAAAAAA-FI/ZnVthWK3RmsJkJXJ2Vy1CAJPM_Ah3lo6gCLcBGAs/s1600/dog%2Bcollar%2B12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="915" data-original-width="465" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NSzMXn80GfA/XI5Y2Ys-wJI/AAAAAAAA-FI/ZnVthWK3RmsJkJXJ2Vy1CAJPM_Ah3lo6gCLcBGAs/s400/dog%2Bcollar%2B12.jpg" width="202" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SkcfSVqwCG8/XI5Y2wmfa1I/AAAAAAAA-FM/RtVUfWo7JbMfeGaLU06MLdfQQdTaUGXvACLcBGAs/s1600/dog%2Bcollar%2B13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="915" data-original-width="1600" height="366" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SkcfSVqwCG8/XI5Y2wmfa1I/AAAAAAAA-FM/RtVUfWo7JbMfeGaLU06MLdfQQdTaUGXvACLcBGAs/s640/dog%2Bcollar%2B13.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
You will most likely have to adjust a bit at this point, pulling the collar through the hardware to have most of the collar free, per the below photo.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pxxCP-UqpWE/XI5Y3VKAXpI/AAAAAAAA-FQ/GKDkC0JvY9IYelSdMrBiOj1YpZgUeaKHQCLcBGAs/s1600/dog%2Bcollar%2B14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="916" data-original-width="719" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pxxCP-UqpWE/XI5Y3VKAXpI/AAAAAAAA-FQ/GKDkC0JvY9IYelSdMrBiOj1YpZgUeaKHQCLcBGAs/s400/dog%2Bcollar%2B14.jpg" width="313" /></a></div>
<br />
Fray check the raw edges. Slide the silver D ring on about 4" down, then pull the collar through the slot on the top of piece #5, and out the bottom of piece number 5. Pull a few inches down and use Wonder Clips to attach the collar in front of and in back of the D ring. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PrDbNh7V5Y0/XI5Y35SaS2I/AAAAAAAA-FU/7D4XOW09cZUcbSOrtj003oFncdVpym0hQCLcBGAs/s1600/dog%2Bcollar%2B15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="915" data-original-width="802" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PrDbNh7V5Y0/XI5Y35SaS2I/AAAAAAAA-FU/7D4XOW09cZUcbSOrtj003oFncdVpym0hQCLcBGAs/s640/dog%2Bcollar%2B15.jpg" width="560" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sc4ODER96JM/XI5Y4esmK2I/AAAAAAAA-FY/gdG8bFguz2kCUjZdE2ytGudRv9qd7e59wCLcBGAs/s1600/dog%2Bcollar%2B16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="916" data-original-width="906" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sc4ODER96JM/XI5Y4esmK2I/AAAAAAAA-FY/gdG8bFguz2kCUjZdE2ytGudRv9qd7e59wCLcBGAs/s640/dog%2Bcollar%2B16.jpg" width="632" /></a></div>
<br />
Attach your zipper foot to your machine, and stitch along side of the D ring on either side as closely as possible.<br />
<br />
You are done!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I buy my dog hardware on Etsy or eBay. You can get them in an assortment of colors and they are fairly cheap.<br />
<br />
I use the 1" for all my dogs. They do come in 3/4" size, but those don't have that little rectangle piece. When I tried the collar without that little rectangle piece, the collar doesn't stay together as nicely when it is adjusted.<br />
<br />
The length that I indicated above are my generalized lengths for my dogs. You will most likely have to try once or twice to get the size exact for your dog.<br />
<br />
I use the webbing on collars that I make for my dog's everyday wear. If you are making a holiday collar, I'd suggest leaving off the webbing as it's only going to be worn for a short period.<br />
<br />
You can wash your collars, but definitely pre-wash both the collar and the webbing prior to sewing.<br />
<br />

I've been thinking a lot about what I make for her. I read so many blogs and see many Instagram posts about how sewists' kids don't want to wear their handmade garments as they get older. For some reason, I haven't had that problem. <br />
<br />
One thing that I do is only sew things that I believe my kid will wear. I try to choose patterns that will work for her, and fabric that she will like.<br />
<br />
When I saw the new pattern from <a href="http://www.eleganceandelephants.com/" target="_blank">Elegance and Elephants</a> I knew it would work for my kid. The <a href="http://eandepatterns.bigcartel.com/product/flora-dress-tunic-pdf-pattern" target="_blank">Flora Dress and Tunic</a> is a fairly simple silhouette, with a bunch of options - dress or tunic, and bodice options. Plus, bonus, no closures! Heidi has struck the right balance of a low-ish back neck and a perfect front neckline so the garment just pulls right over the kid's head.<br />
<br />
Here's how my version started: I had pulled some velour out of one of my many plastic boxes, leftover from sewing for my 3 older kids. My daughter spied this gorgeous velour, and wanted her next garment made from that. Ok, so fine. I decided on tunic length, and would line it with pink cotton lawn. I decided to size up based on the heavy fabric and hoped it would work. After printing, taping and cutting, I laid out the pattern on the fabric and - you guessed it - not enough velour. Even with my best Ninja cutting, it wasn't going to work.<br />
<br />
Onto plan B.<br />
<br />
Since I have fabric yardage lying all over my house, my next thought was some very nice double gauze. Being lazy, I didn't re-print the pattern - I just used it in the size 7 with 9 length that I had previously cut. It's probably a bit big, but definitely worked.<br />

I added a bit of piping to accent the front seams, otherwise this is straight up sewn as is. This will last her a while - and she loves it! We took pictures after school yesterday and she asked if she could wear it to school today. She came downstairs to breakfast, and notified me that she had even worn it to bed! So, it passed the test!Janice http://www.blogger.com/profile/15516765600724614193noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6413098244817537843.post-90510858609468263222017-03-23T03:49:00.000-07:002017-03-23T03:49:11.594-07:00The Mira Dress from Elegance and ElephantsHi! Have you seen the new pattern from <a href="http://www.eleganceandelephants.com/" target="_blank">Heidi at Elegance and Elephants?</a> She started posting her photos on Instagram a while ago, and I was immediately intrigued - a square neckline gets me every time! If you don't already follow Heidi and her blog you should; she's got a great line of patterns, and she always posts very helpful sewing tips and info.<br />
<br />
Without further ado, here's my version of the Mira - and then I'll tell you how it came to be:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lnGJOXhcbCs/WNOkPOyCQGI/AAAAAAAAoYc/-4z1c9puGN8N-zen-UhEZ9haiHEacXlgwCLcB/s1600/Mira%2Bdress%2Bflat%2Blay.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="635" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lnGJOXhcbCs/WNOkPOyCQGI/AAAAAAAAoYc/-4z1c9puGN8N-zen-UhEZ9haiHEacXlgwCLcB/s640/Mira%2Bdress%2Bflat%2Blay.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
This was not what I had planned. The plan was an embroidered bodice, contrast hem in a lovely grey and white check that I've been saving for the right project. Well, little did I realize that since we moved to Michigan in August, I have not used the embroidery function on my sewing machine. Sadly, I cannot for the life of me find the stupid cord that I need to download embroidery designs! So, that version will have to wait...<br />
<br />
While I was coming up with a plan B, Julia was lurking around my sewing area....and found <a href="http://urban-sew.com/product/ivory-from-woodland-clearing-agq-15844-15/" target="_blank">this Woodland Clearing cotton lawn</a> from Robert Kaufman...and this crocheted lace. I asked if she would like a dress, and she said no; she wanted a long top to wear with her skinny jeans. Well, ok then!<br />
<br />

<br />
Please excuse the horrible indoor photos - it's still super-cold here. I actually did try to take outside photos...but the poor child was miserable, so we ran back inside. Oh, yes, also please forgive the end-of-the-day-after-school hair! Actually, the hair is apres-school, apres-dance class! <br />
<br />
Anyways, she squealed when she saw the top. Success! Also, she pointed out that she can wear it to school when it's warm as it will pass the non-spaghetti strap rule. This is VERY important in Julia's life! <br />
<br />
As to the pattern, as always with Heidi's patterns, the instructions are great. The photos are clear. She has a video tutorial that you can refer to regarding the "burrito" method of making the bodice. It may be a bit confusing the first time you try this method, but once you see where it leads, it's not confusing at all and you end up with a beautifully finished bodice....and who doesn't love that!<br />
<br />
Heidi is offering a coupon code in her shop - it's "MIRATOUR" and it will be for 10% off your entire order from the shop. This code will expire on <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_1846777080" tabindex="0"><span class="aQJ">Monday, March 27 at 11:59PM PST</span></span>.<br />
<br />
Thanks Heidi for asking me to participate in your blog tour, and thanks for a great pattern! <br />

It's a game changer....really!<br />
<br />
A couple of months ago, I saw a cute jacket pattern that I really liked. I had never heard of the designer so I was a bit unsure about her sizing, etc. So, what I decided to do was replicate the design using the skills I had learned from the Building Block Dress book. (And, I actually bought the pattern so as not to be a copying scumbag....)<br />
<br />
I have always loved the look of the Oliver + S Sunday Brunch jacket, but when I made it for Julia, she hated - yes, hated - the collar. I wanted a light jacket, similar to that and this fit the bill.<br />
<br />
I used some gorgeous <a href="http://urban-sew.com/product/kokka-nani-iro-fuccra-rakuen-phi-phi/" target="_blank">Nani Iro brushed cotton</a> from my shop. I pre-washed the fabric as usual and it washed up great. It's kind of a heavy weight flannel weight-wise. I lined it with quilting cotton. <br />
<br />
I asked the lovely folks in the Building Block Dress Facebook group for advise on closures and they came up with large, sew-in snaps inside so as not to take away from the print. A great idea!<br />
<br />
Here's the result:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C9zeKVFbOsU/WJ8ZyBdlPuI/AAAAAAAAmuo/__3D2-wTBucWPemTVkd7qT-ANS5xaXB_ACLcB/s1600/DSC_0231.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C9zeKVFbOsU/WJ8ZyBdlPuI/AAAAAAAAmuo/__3D2-wTBucWPemTVkd7qT-ANS5xaXB_ACLcB/s400/DSC_0231.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FEgwFo1vySM/WJ8ZzlSdKZI/AAAAAAAAmu0/RCBS8I2HsIEwzf_kkF-wL4_GvljSIiOWgCLcB/s1600/DSC_0233.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FEgwFo1vySM/WJ8ZzlSdKZI/AAAAAAAAmu0/RCBS8I2HsIEwzf_kkF-wL4_GvljSIiOWgCLcB/s640/DSC_0233.jpg" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yxxD3TNULYI/WJ8Z0HblGKI/AAAAAAAAmu4/GsR9yXXfizkwTgMbpCWNf7i2Shw2LWw6QCLcB/s1600/DSC_0237.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yxxD3TNULYI/WJ8Z0HblGKI/AAAAAAAAmu4/GsR9yXXfizkwTgMbpCWNf7i2Shw2LWw6QCLcB/s400/DSC_0237.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
Next, I actually measured my child. As it turns out, her measurement ended up being a size 4 for width, and size 8 for height. No wonder we can't buy dresses off the rack!<br />
<br />
I started with a fairly basic version - a pieced bodice, sleeveless. I used the option to fully line the dress and an invisible zipper in the back. The fabric is Japanese cotton sheeting - yes, it's <a href="http://urban-sew.com/product/kokka-hello-kitty-pink/" target="_blank">Hello Kitty!</a> Ok, so maybe it's not everyone's cup of tea to use Hello Kitty fabric for a dress, but it works for the 7 year old!<br />

I'm REALLY happy with the way this came out. Julia told me this morning that what she loves about the dress is the way it fits at the waist, then flares out. In fact, we took these photos, then she decided to keep the dress on...to me, that's a success!<br />
<br />
While I love the look of the scalloped bodice, I didn't have the energy to do the hemline with the contrast....I think it's fine the way it is and may have been too busy with the scalloped hemline. So, my laziness paid off! <br />
<br />
Thanks for reading! <br />

<br />
Since the last time I did a meanful blog post, my family has moved across the country, changed jobs, changed schools....quite an eventful 2016!<br />
<br />
We are now living in Michigan and I must admit I'm having a bit of a tough time getting used to it. I left a job I loved, all my friends, and my two adult sons in California. It is nice with a ridiculously low cost of living here, and seasons! I haven't lived in seasons since I moved away from Toronto in 1995. We really enjoyed the fall, and are enjoying winter - for the most part!<br />
<br />
We are continuing our fabric business, and will be traveling to Quiltcon in Savannah, GA in February, so that will be quite an adventure! I'll be making up some sample garments, bags, and maybe even a quilt of some sort to take with us, and hopefully I will share them here.<br />
<br />
I started 2017 out by actually completing a project!<br />
<br />
This is the <a href="http://www.brooklynpatterns.com/shop/franklin-dress" target="_blank">Franklin Dress</a> from Brooklyn Pattern Company. I had made the Bedford Dress previously, and the child loves and and gets compliments every time she wears it. So I was confident in putting the Franklin Dress into rotation.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7ZAt1OLpbmU/WGpdowcT8lI/AAAAAAAAlr8/bXgPGTM5kNotXeeCD66CZk3f9yienWxvgCPcB/s1600/DSC_0106.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7ZAt1OLpbmU/WGpdowcT8lI/AAAAAAAAlr8/bXgPGTM5kNotXeeCD66CZk3f9yienWxvgCPcB/s640/DSC_0106.jpg" width="425" /></a></div>
I made this from corduroy that has long been in my stash - it really could be about 15 years old! I was indecisive as to the silhouette of this dress for a 7 year old - I was worried she may think it was too juvenile, so I added a belt that I slammed together....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/--4voOMJdPws/WGpdsmMv1PI/AAAAAAAAlr8/dPyLiZreF2Uyo4RxUIHcOOkUdn__J9H1wCPcB/s1600/DSC_0099.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/--4voOMJdPws/WGpdsmMv1PI/AAAAAAAAlr8/dPyLiZreF2Uyo4RxUIHcOOkUdn__J9H1wCPcB/s400/DSC_0099.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
I'm not convinced with the belt. It needed to be smaller, and I need to actually add belt loops. The kid's waist still measures 20", so I was worried making it too small and gathering all that corduroy! I may re-visit the belt....<br />
<br />
Either way, I quite like the dress, and Julia does too. The construction is kind of odd in some spots, but generally, when I first make a pattern, I make it exactly as the designer indicates to ensure I don't screw up. This dress is a size 6 with 8 length.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RPxP4lWEAhc/WGpdrYoabVI/AAAAAAAAlr8/AVOY0BhZCOsRogNQo5csiufLEfftmrnjACPcB/s1600/DSC_0098.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RPxP4lWEAhc/WGpdrYoabVI/AAAAAAAAlr8/AVOY0BhZCOsRogNQo5csiufLEfftmrnjACPcB/s400/DSC_0098.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The bodice is Nani Iro double gauze from <a href="http://www.urban-sew.com/" target="_blank">my shop</a> - I went back and forth making the dress from the double gauze with the corduroy for the bodice - in the end, I decided to keep the extra double gauze and make a Bedford top for the summer - a win, win!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WzEwkY_kk-M/WGpdtQjIxbI/AAAAAAAAlr8/dm8G4RTxVw8qSySnerkJbU4DxtdOI5F1gCPcB/s1600/DSC_0110.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WzEwkY_kk-M/WGpdtQjIxbI/AAAAAAAAlr8/dm8G4RTxVw8qSySnerkJbU4DxtdOI5F1gCPcB/s400/DSC_0110.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-F9MtdeRMHPE/WGpdqbVhO5I/AAAAAAAAlr8/yczN7uNfPN0FRz8dcn4dmh7_wGtV8-p9wCPcB/s1600/DSC_0096.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-F9MtdeRMHPE/WGpdqbVhO5I/AAAAAAAAlr8/yczN7uNfPN0FRz8dcn4dmh7_wGtV8-p9wCPcB/s640/DSC_0096.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
So, here it is - the first make of 2017....hopefully way more to come! <br /><br />

Success? Failure? Well, a little bit of both.<br />
<br />
I set my sights high and pulled fabric for about 8 items. What I ended up with was this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ujm71lrp3xQ/V0xWosNtDSI/AAAAAAAAeeU/CBM8-w9A-Tg66tiI3r0oOvql10djuu4FQCLcB/s1600/20160530_074628.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ujm71lrp3xQ/V0xWosNtDSI/AAAAAAAAeeU/CBM8-w9A-Tg66tiI3r0oOvql10djuu4FQCLcB/s400/20160530_074628.jpg" width="362" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
I guess in the normal world of sewing, I'd be happy. I completed both outfits this week, worked 40 hours, did about a million kid activities and took about 10 trips to the dog park.<br />
<br />
The details:<br />
<br />
Outfit number 1 - two <a href="http://oliverands.com/free-patterns/" target="_blank">free patterns from Oliver + S</a> - the Popover dress made into a tunic, and my much-used Sunny Days Shorts. The top and shorts are both size 5. On the tunic, I added width on the front panel and gathered it a bit. The fabric is a nice light seersucker from Robert Kaufman. The shorts are a medium weight cotton denim fabric that has been living in my stash forever. Nice to use that stash fabric! I shortened the shorts 2 inches from the pattern length - works better with the heavier fabric. I added pockets to both the front and back of the shorts....gotta have pockets!<br />
<br />
Outfit number 2 - the <a href="http://oliverands.com/oliver-and-s-patterns/OLV-OS051BB.html" target="_blank">Butterfly Blouse and Skirt</a> from Oliver + S sewn in a size 5 with 7 length. The top is <a href="https://urban-sew.com/category/collections/woodland-clearing/" target="_blank">Woodland Clearing lawn</a> and the skirt is a heavy cotton linen. I've made the skirt a bunch of times for school uniforms, but this was the first time I've made the top. It's a very sweet pattern - I definitely recommend it!<br />
<br />
Here's some modeled shots of both outfits (no pictures of the shorts yet!):<br />

And when I sewed, I didn't necessarily blog. But, I think I may be getting back on track!<br />
<br />
I made a quick outfit for Julia on Saturday. Previously, just about two years ago, I made these shorts:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dLlrG_B3i4I/VyaM8-JwQ9I/AAAAAAAAc8I/u2jIZr15EcctFAGUuxs5sP-eeOdVrQ4pACLcB/s1600/14276371865_d16a463959_m.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dLlrG_B3i4I/VyaM8-JwQ9I/AAAAAAAAc8I/u2jIZr15EcctFAGUuxs5sP-eeOdVrQ4pACLcB/s400/14276371865_d16a463959_m.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
Well, these shorts stayed in the drawer for about a year and a half. She refused to wear them. Then, all of a sudden, they became The Golden Boy (Seinfeld reference) of her wardrobe. Every day, when she got home from school, on went these shorts and a black tank. Every day. These shorts are now a pretty disgusting shade of grey with flowers.<br />
<br />
So, I used some similar fleece and made this outfit:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H2LbYDVxXUE/VyaNjlwfGqI/AAAAAAAAc8c/Ak2yJulrbnEY-0zAzkcINgZGHdHJbwmQACLcB/s1600/DSC_0836.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H2LbYDVxXUE/VyaNjlwfGqI/AAAAAAAAc8c/Ak2yJulrbnEY-0zAzkcINgZGHdHJbwmQACLcB/s640/DSC_0836.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lh4YQMflEPA/VyaNjsztscI/AAAAAAAAc8Y/GbRb0GGlaQErIrgCGUdUcBMT60qdTDmZQCLcB/s1600/DSC_0840.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lh4YQMflEPA/VyaNjsztscI/AAAAAAAAc8Y/GbRb0GGlaQErIrgCGUdUcBMT60qdTDmZQCLcB/s400/DSC_0840.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3aT1BTlB4M8/VyaNjhs2E0I/AAAAAAAAc8Q/cdDG0wA70_gSqldA2MdMDBcuGp_PP-gdQCLcB/s1600/DSC_0841.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3aT1BTlB4M8/VyaNjhs2E0I/AAAAAAAAc8Q/cdDG0wA70_gSqldA2MdMDBcuGp_PP-gdQCLcB/s640/DSC_0841.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H932YLvzf5I/VyaNj0ZYSSI/AAAAAAAAc8U/KDIkvyJLEvcbSeE21LsN5YEiCvrRz218ACLcB/s1600/DSC_0868.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H932YLvzf5I/VyaNj0ZYSSI/AAAAAAAAc8U/KDIkvyJLEvcbSeE21LsN5YEiCvrRz218ACLcB/s400/DSC_0868.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
These shorts are a size 5 straight up. I may make the next pair a bit shorter - they are kind of an awkward length. The previous ones were a size 4 and I think she still could wear a size 4. The pattern is the free <a href="https://oliverands.com/free-patterns/sunny-day-shorts/" target="_blank">Sunny Days Shorts</a> from Oliver + S. I added front pockets and back pockets. Gotta have pockets.<br />
<br />
The top is another Oliver + S pattern - the <a href="http://oliverands.com/liesl-and-co-patterns/OLV-LC009FP-D.html" target="_blank">School Bus T-Shirt</a>. This is a size 4 with about 5 inches added to the length. The fabric is hideous to work with. It is that kind of burn-out fabric which my daughter loves. Unfortunately, it's a pain in the butt to work with - it curled like nobody's business. The neck band application was atrocious so I went to the iron to give it a blast of steam. Mistake. Burnt a hole in it, hence, the lovely bow at the neckline. I was actually going to put it straight in the trash, but Julia really liked it, so we'll see what happens....I have more of the hideous fabric - a lot more.<br />
<br />
Next up, a Mother's Day gift.....Janice http://www.blogger.com/profile/15516765600724614193noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6413098244817537843.post-15561883674485308562016-04-14T06:00:00.000-07:002016-04-16T07:48:01.876-07:00Puperita PatternsI was invited to join a small group of bloggers to showcase the patterns from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/PUPERITA" target="_blank">Puperita</a>. If you check out this shop, you'll find a ton of very sweet, very well designed patterns for your kids. There are patterns for the really little ones, and some for the bigger kids (up to size 10). She's got boy patterns, girl patterns, and accessories.<br />
<br />
I first found these patterns on Etsy, then joined the Facebook group. Lots of inspiration there! The pattern designer seems to be always online to answer questions and deal with any possible issues. Seriously amazing customer service!<br />
<br />
Without further ado, here's the outfit that I put together:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I'm really trying hard lately to think about what Julia likes to wear. We got her these gold Saltwater sandals - right up her alley. So, I used some Wright's gold metallic bias tape to really bring this outfit together. There are two gold buttons on the back as well - found in my stash, which is always a plus. The top is lawn from <a href="https://urban-sew.com/product/regent-street-lawn-2015-in-charcoal/" target="_blank">my shop</a>. It's from Moda, and is very nice. Kind of Liberty-esque without the price tag. Still, Julia's favorite fabric is double gauze, but she does like this top very much. It's light and airy - won't make her hot which is something she hates. The shorts are made from some Japanese canvas. It's actually different on each side which is very cool. What will be cool is if I ever get it listed in the shop, because it came on a huge roll and I actually have no place big enough to cut it properly!<br />
<br />
The top pattern is the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/118255543/liberty-style-girl-blouse-tunic-top?ref=shop_home_active_1&ga_search_query=liberty" target="_blank">Liberty Style Blouse</a>. It went together very nicely. This is a size 5 with 6 length. I think it could use more length - Julia suggested adding a "frizzle" - aka ruffle! Not a bad idea. The shorts are actually a boy's shorts pattern - the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/102183901/funny-boy-shorts-pattern-pdf-sewing?ref=shop_home_active_1&ga_search_query=funny" target="_blank">Funny Boy Shorts</a>. I made a size 4 in these and lopped off about an inch from the top of the shorts before adding the waistband. I like the fit on these and am going to make another using knit for the main part and woven for the waist and hem.<br />
<br />
Oh, and did I mention that her patterns are seriously well priced? Kind of the icing on the cake, eh?!<br />
<br />

<br />
So, here's my first non-uniform make in several months....the <a href="http://oliverands.com/product/OLV-OS012JR.html" target="_blank">Jump Rope Dress from Oliver + S</a>. This is one of their oldest patterns, and definitely one of my - and Julia's - favorites.<br />
<br />
I used fabric chosen by Julia - two lawns from <a href="https://urban-sew.com/category/collections/woodland-clearing/" target="_blank">Woodland Clearing </a>by Liesl Gibson for Robert Kaufman. We brought this line to Quiltcon and it pretty much got decimated. More about that in a bit....<br />

Julia chose a subtle contrast for the collar/placket. If you haven't make this pattern, quickly run to the Oliver + S site and buy it if you want the most satisfying sew ever. Ren of <a href="http://theinspiredwren.blogspot.com/2016/03/oliver-s-favorite-jump-rope-dress.html" target="_blank">The Inspired Wren</a> recently was feature on the Oliver + S blog with her versions of this pattern - she highlighted several of her plackets and I'm here to tell you that every time I make this dress, I hang up the completed bodice and admire my own work for at least a day! There's something about that placket....<br />
<br />
And about the fabric - well, our <a href="http://www.urban-sew.com/" target="_blank">little business</a> had a booth at the huge quilt show, Quiltcon. It was an absolutely amazing experience. We met a bunch of wonderful people who share the love of sewing. My poor kid had to attend for 3 days - pretty tough for a 6 year old, but she schmoozed with all the other vendors, and met fabric designers like the super-nice Melody Miller from Cotton + Steel...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o69OD8la7bw/Vvfq5UWv47I/AAAAAAAAb8w/cLsWGSRoHLEXMYQIhOtYh1donq6gObCQw/s1600/Julia%2Band%2BMelody%2BMiller.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o69OD8la7bw/Vvfq5UWv47I/AAAAAAAAb8w/cLsWGSRoHLEXMYQIhOtYh1donq6gObCQw/s400/Julia%2Band%2BMelody%2BMiller.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
There's definitely something to be said for having actual in-person contact with your customers - people who get to feel the fabric, and see the fabric up close and personal. Which is why our collection of Woodland Clearing got thrashed - people absolutely adored it! It's soft so lots of folks told me that they were going to be using it for baby clothes. Personally, I'd love to see/feel a quilt made from cotton lawn.<br />
<br />
Anyways, watch this space for more sewing! My kid is quickly growing and seriously has no summer clothes! As a note, the Jump Rope dress is sewn in a size 5 with 7 length. I can't even believe that I'm using a 7 length for my baby!!<br />

There's a lot of good things on Facebook (and a lot of crazy nut-job things too...) but one thing that is great is like-minded, or at least like-sewing-minded folks coming together. It's kind of a beautiful thing.<br />
<br />
Definitely (if you haven't already) check out these blogs for some seriously amazing creations - all made from a wide variety of Japanese patterns....and, yes, mostly written in Japanese!<br />

<br />
I love the clean lines of Japanese patterns. I only own 4 - 3 children's clothing, and 1 dog clothing generously gifted to me from the brains behind <a href="http://bartacksandsingletrack.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Bartacks and Singletrack</a>. I actually intended to make a dog outfit for my small pup, but I ran out of pattern tracing paper. So, poor Sadie has to go without...for now.<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
I used the Pintuck Smock pattern from Happy Homemade Sew Chic Kids. Yes, it's translated into English. I feel a bit like a cheat. I made a long sleeve version which is what is shown on the dress version of the pattern. I used the size 120 for my tall, skinny-ish 6 year old. For the top, I used fabric from my shop - a <a href="https://urban-sew.com/product/kokka-small-lavender-flowers/" target="_blank">lawn from Kokka</a>. Lawn really is a great choice for this pattern, in my opinion. Being cheap with my fabric, I actually couldn't squeeze in the pattern pieces with a seam allowance for the hem, so I thought I'd add some lace. Turns out, my kid really, really likes lace. She squealed when she saw the back pockets on the shorts.<br />
<br />
For the shorts, I used another pattern from Sew Chic Kids - Shorts with Back Pockets. I really didn't even read the directions for these, as they are pretty simple shorts. I made a size 110 in these as I wasn't sure if the kid would go for the long fairly oversized shorts. Turns out she fits perfectly in the 110 and she was very happy with the shorts. Next time, I think I"ll combine the pockets on the Knee Length Shorts pattern with this pattern as my child really likes both front and back pockets. The fabric on the shorts is from the shop also - <a href="https://urban-sew.com/product/robert-kaufman-fabrics-denim-chambray-dobbies/" target="_blank">Denim Chambray Dobby</a> from Robert Kaufman. <br />
<br />
Stuff I messed up on- I did the pintucks the wrong way. I think they're supposed to stick out on the front side, not the back. I didn't cut the front neck facing strip on the bias so it doesn't lay very well. And, next time I make this top, I will use a plain fabric just so the sweet details show up better.<br />
<br />
And, last but not least, there's a giveaway! <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

Here's a few photos from the past few Halloweens....<br />

<br />
<br />
Ok, so I didn't make the first one....but it's so cute I had to include it! The only year that we didn't do trick or treat was when Julia was two...she was sick that year, sadly.<br />
<br />
I could dig through my photo archives and find photos of my older kids....I recall a dalmatian, a bumblebee, and Humpty Dumpty. Maybe I'll find photos of those in my spare time.<br />
<br />
But, this year, Julia decided quite early who she wanted to be, and I knew it would be really easy - Word Girl from PBS Kids. I actually love that show, so I was totally on board.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Here's the details:<br />
<br />
I used Catalina knit from Robert Kaufman - I seriously love it! It's 100% cotton and a great weight - perfect for this project. The belt is Kraft-Tex paper fabric (which we sell in <a href="https://urban-sew.com/product/kraft-tex-paper-fabric-tan/" target="_blank">the shop</a>) with a large grommet glued on. The cape design was a great suggestion from Shelley at <a href="http://bartacksandsingletrack.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Bartacks and Singletrack</a> to use the patter for the baby bib from Little Things to Sew by Liesl Gibson - worked perfectly!<br />
<br />
Patterns used:<br />
<br />
Playtime leggings from Oliver + S<br />
School Bus t-shirt from Oliver + S<br />
Cozy Winter Hood from Little Things to Sew<br />
Messy Kid Bib from Little Things to Sew<br />
<br />
A super easy costume! <br />
<br />Janice http://www.blogger.com/profile/15516765600724614193noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6413098244817537843.post-87015818895080232712015-09-27T08:54:00.000-07:002015-09-27T08:54:27.022-07:00A Four Corners Butterfly....You know how sometimes a particular fabric screams at you, demands to be made into a certain pattern RIGHT NOW? Or is that only me?<br />
<br />
Have you seen the new fabric line <a href="https://urban-sew.com/category/collections/four-corners/" target="_blank">Four Corners by Simple Simon</a>? It's their first fabric line for Riley Blake, and we sell it in our shop. Well, I was cutting some of <a href="https://urban-sew.com/product/four-corners-main-black-sparkle/" target="_blank">this fabric</a> for an order....a seriously bold print (right up my alley), black and white (also right up my alley) with gold metallic accents (right up Julia's alley)....so Julia saw me cutting this and asked me what I could make her from this fabric.<br />
<br />
Lying on my table waiting to be used was the <a href="http://oliverands.com/product/OLV-OS051BBD.html" target="_blank">Butterfly Blouse and Skirt</a> pattern from Oliver + S. Yes, that would work!<br />
<br />
So, while I still should be sewing school uniforms as my child really only has two complete outfits, I decided to join in with the Oliver + S Monochrome Challenge...even though the gold probably really doesn't count....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x7Dg_FZDFSI/VggO3wXSlAI/AAAAAAAAWQU/V6J0DGuHzDs/s1600/DSC_0030.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x7Dg_FZDFSI/VggO3wXSlAI/AAAAAAAAWQU/V6J0DGuHzDs/s400/DSC_0030.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hI59XY-0aKU/VggO4dj_EXI/AAAAAAAAWQs/wVEvOLTvH8g/s1600/DSC_0976.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hI59XY-0aKU/VggO4dj_EXI/AAAAAAAAWQs/wVEvOLTvH8g/s640/DSC_0976.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
The skirt is a size 5. I wanted a short cropped top and was looking at the Oliver + S Lunchbox pattern....but I knew I'd never make culottes. So, I remembered the old standy - the Sailboat Top. I made it in <a href="https://urban-sew.com/product/ponte-de-roma-double-knit-black/" target="_blank">black ponte de Roma double knit</a> from my shop. I shortened it into a crop top and used snaps for the shoulder closures. I used a size 6 to get the boxy look I was going for.<br />
<br />
To get more use out of this adorable top, I decided to use some old gymnastics leotard fabric leftover from my leotard sewing days.....I used the Playtime leggings pattern from Oliver + S also. I only have this pattern up to a size 4 and realistically should invest in the size 5. This is a pattern I've gotten a TON of use out of if only for the leggings. So these leggings are a size 4 with about 4 inches added to the length.<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
These have a kind of Peg Bundy vibe especially with the zebra print clogs.....I've stopped using elastic at the waist of this legging pattern and lower the waist by about 2 inches at the front and add ribbing. Works perfectly.<br />

<br />
Here's what they have to say about this collection:<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 16px;"><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><i><span style="color: blue;">Inspired by the Japanese art of origami our new collection brings you a
fresh and modern range of patterns for stylish and adventurous kids.<br />
Each piece incorporates unique detail; clever folds, beautiful pleats and concealed pockets.<br />
We don’t think kids should save clothes for special occasions, we think they should<b> look good everyday</b>.</span></i></span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 16px;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: blue;"><span style="color: black;">I chose to combine the Playsuit Top from the Supplement pattern with the Pocket Fold Skirt. I asked my child to model, and model she did!</span></span></span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: 16px;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: blue;"><span style="color: black;"> Ok, so that's a lot of pictures! All fabrics are from Robert Kaufman - white shirting, the plaid accents, and the lightweight denim skirt.</span></span></span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 16px;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: blue;"><span style="color: black;">But, here's a sad note....my sewing machine died while making this outfit! Luckily, I had - actually, Santa had - gifted Julia a Janome Hello Kitty machine last Christmas....so, this outfit was sewn on a Hello Kitty machine! It worked great actually....I highly recommend it both as a kid's learning machine, and as an emergency backup! </span></span></span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 16px;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: blue;"><span style="color: black;">The top was a quick sew, but the skirt definitely takes a bit of thought....the pattern directions are very clear, and the result is really impressive. All seams are finished, the facings bound in contrast bias....very nice touches!</span></span></span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 16px;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: blue;"><span style="color: black;">Definitely check out their patterns.....and giveaways on Instragram through tomorrow!</span></span></span></span><br />

Thanks for stopping by.....more sewing soon - plus some very boring school uniforms!Janice http://www.blogger.com/profile/15516765600724614193noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6413098244817537843.post-30365164991541673082015-07-12T09:01:00.000-07:002015-07-12T09:01:47.177-07:00A Bedford in Double Gauze...I have been sorely neglecting this little blog lately....I have been sewing, but not doing such a great job of documenting.<br />
<br />
I have lost a bit of my sew-jo - at least for right now. Julia will be going to a public school next year (kindergarten - finally!) and they wear uniforms. Navy blue, white. The end. Nothing else. I went to my local shop and bought some white blouse fabric, and a bunch of navy in various substrates - very nice, but boring nonetheless.<br />
<br />
I recall when I sewed for my older children, school uniforms really became the demise of my sewing. Once they wear school uniforms, and are involved in sports, really all they wear are athletic wear and uniforms. For a while, I sewed my older daughter's gymnastics leotards. Then, I took about a 10 year sewing hiatus.....<br />
<br />
Anyways, I've been working slowly on a super-cute top for the past couple of weeks. It wasn't difficult; I just get interrupted and side-tracked very easily. The top is the <a href="http://www.brooklynpatterns.com/shop/bedford-dress" target="_blank">Bedford Top</a> from Brooklyn Patterns. This is their second pattern release - previously, they opened up shop with one pattern - the <a href="http://www.brooklynpatterns.com/shop/franklin-dress" target="_blank">Franklin Dress</a>. I bought that pattern as a result of the many cute ones on their blog tour...but haven't had a chance to sew it yet. <br />
<br />
The Bedford Dress and Top has an amazing back - even my daughter said to me that she loves the back and that the people who made it did a really good job on the pattern. Now that's a serious compliment! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yq49eINQbU4/VaKMn7j9QaI/AAAAAAAAUV4/XwtjPJu4Hsk/s1600/DSC_0056.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yq49eINQbU4/VaKMn7j9QaI/AAAAAAAAUV4/XwtjPJu4Hsk/s400/DSC_0056.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fkyOx3DWg7U/VaKMoCwSJQI/AAAAAAAAUV8/gPS1FsUikf4/s1600/DSC_0059.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fkyOx3DWg7U/VaKMoCwSJQI/AAAAAAAAUV8/gPS1FsUikf4/s640/DSC_0059.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
This is a size 4 with 6 length. Seriously, this back!<br />
<br />
The pattern is drafted very well - line drawings, not photos in the instructions. I'm personally huge on line drawings and not a big fan of photos in instructions - but that's just my personal preference. I spent a good deal of time putting in the zipper. I actually hand-basted it in because I wanted to get it just right. When you have a bold feature, you want to make sure it's not wonky!<br />
<br />
I actually intended to make the dress, but due to a cutting error/fabric miserly mistake, I ended up with the top. The fabric is <a href="https://urban-sew.com/product/kokka-joielinne-houndstooth-steel-gray/" target="_blank">a Kokka double gauze</a> from my shop - it's really Julia's favorite fabric substrate. <br />

<br />
Here is an ADORABLE skirt that has already been worn twice since I made it - <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This skirt - the <a href="http://oliverands.com/product/OLV-OS034HH.html" target="_blank">Oliver + S Hula Hoop Skirt</a>. It's reversible. It's girly, but not frilly. It has a drop waist, and a flounce that shows off the underside accent fabric. Enough said?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7he28lVOapo/VUApIxNBTvI/AAAAAAAAPlM/_E_U7Xm9MVE/s1600/DSC_0003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7he28lVOapo/VUApIxNBTvI/AAAAAAAAPlM/_E_U7Xm9MVE/s1600/DSC_0003.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Once I figured out where the notches go, it took me no time whatsoever to put this together. Since I made this one, I slapped together another one that is waiting patiently to get photographed....<br />
<br />
The fabric is quilting cotton from <a href="https://urban-sew.com/category/collections/elizabeth-tula-pink/" target="_blank">Tula Pink's Elizabeth line</a> from my shop. I love using a bold print for a skirt; it doesn't overpower the kid and you can be as funky as you like. And, I seriously love some funky prints....obviously!!<br />
<br />

This is how blogging during Kid's Clothes Week ends up - a back burner to the actual sewing and photographing.<br />
<br />
This
dress was made probably in 5 minute spurts; lots of them. This was
actually how I used to sew in the "old days" when my 3 older kids were
little. I would just leave a project out on the sewing table, and every time I walked by,
I'd sew a teeny bit. Things actually did get made that way.<br />
<br />

<br />
This dress started because we got a bunch of really nice <a href="https://urban-sew.com/category/linen/" target="_blank">linen in the shop</a>. Now, when I was a kid, and I would shop with my mom, she would always tell me never to get linen because it wrinkles too much. Since learning more about fibers, and kids clothes, I think that linen is perfect for kids clothes. Yes, it wrinkles. Yes, you can both wash and machine dry it. You can iron it. It's super durable. So, if you can stand an imperfect slightly wrinkled look on your kid (which I actually like) then linen is for you.<br />
<br />

This pattern is the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/PeachPatterns?ref=l2-shopheader-name" target="_blank">Little Ellie</a> dress from Peach Patterns (formerly Wink Designs). It's a really sweet pattern - what I absolutely love is the round yoke. The directions are excellent, and the yoke kind of goes together like a magic trick with no exposed seams anywhere. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-omXt_mpOK9Q/VTzx9YqpgtI/AAAAAAAAPic/kskrvSDe0Zo/s1600/DSC_0193.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-omXt_mpOK9Q/VTzx9YqpgtI/AAAAAAAAPic/kskrvSDe0Zo/s1600/DSC_0193.jpg" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>

<br />
So, the red linen is a great dress weight. My child likes breezy dresses, and this is what she gets. The print fabric is a quilting cotton - a very large scale print by <a href="https://urban-sew.com/product/jane-sassaman-wild-child-passionate-petunias/" target="_blank">Jane Sassaman's Wild Child collection</a>. I'm a huge lover of large scale prints, but probably not on an entire dress. When you cut it up as an accent, it's pretty much perfect.<br />

Have you been following along with the ladies' at <a href="http://skirtfixation.com/" target="_blank">Skirt Fixation</a> and their quest to sew All The Skirts?<br />
<br />
Well, they asked me to round up the <a href="http://oliverands.com/" target="_blank">Oliver + S</a> skirts I had sewn - it was quite a little trip down my sewing-memory-lane...<br />
<br />
The absolute first pattern I bought and garment I sewed using an Oliver + S pattern was the Sailboat skirt - I combined it the Hopscotch top for an adorable outfit for my then 18 month old:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dx0YOcB8g1k/VSVQWOWFbzI/AAAAAAAAPdQ/CULx9bq5Z9Y/s1600/5925834325_6ec5f524cd_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dx0YOcB8g1k/VSVQWOWFbzI/AAAAAAAAPdQ/CULx9bq5Z9Y/s1600/5925834325_6ec5f524cd_o.jpg" height="640" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
When girls are still little, they have a combination of diaper butt and protruding gut that makes skirt wearing (in my opinion!) a bit of a style challenge. But, not to be deterred, I made another:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-94Lnntc1P5U/VSVRdFD_FOI/AAAAAAAAPdc/eC-ofYnAEEY/s1600/7743936098_5b034ee701_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-94Lnntc1P5U/VSVRdFD_FOI/AAAAAAAAPdc/eC-ofYnAEEY/s1600/7743936098_5b034ee701_o.jpg" height="400" width="265" /></a></div>
I have made a few of the Lazy Days skirts - a FREE, and totally simple skirt with an ingenious hem finish:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qkMXY7IISKA/VSVRuUOqW1I/AAAAAAAAPdk/9TlwaFa98Qs/s1600/6866067996_552e8b6087_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qkMXY7IISKA/VSVRuUOqW1I/AAAAAAAAPdk/9TlwaFa98Qs/s1600/6866067996_552e8b6087_o.jpg" height="640" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x4dxtcQqu-U/VSVRundJCHI/AAAAAAAAPdo/Qoa2Q7rFwhE/s1600/7111509125_2119c5bb55_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x4dxtcQqu-U/VSVRundJCHI/AAAAAAAAPdo/Qoa2Q7rFwhE/s1600/7111509125_2119c5bb55_o.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LqlkeDn2rh8/VSVRvpvWRWI/AAAAAAAAPd0/CvqPAaUNwfg/s1600/7578060354_c77828db7d_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LqlkeDn2rh8/VSVRvpvWRWI/AAAAAAAAPd0/CvqPAaUNwfg/s1600/7578060354_c77828db7d_o.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EEHdPYGHmLI/VSVSMRp5_UI/AAAAAAAAPd8/5JH7ldfUO0o/s1600/8307521341_4991f399ce_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EEHdPYGHmLI/VSVSMRp5_UI/AAAAAAAAPd8/5JH7ldfUO0o/s1600/8307521341_4991f399ce_o.jpg" height="640" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
Another pattern that I've made multiples of is the Hopscotch Skirt - I made a denim version with no pockets, and a linen/cotton one with pockets. For both, I didn't do buttons down the front; I just sewed the buttons on through all layers. The skirt pulled on easily, so for my kid's shape, functioning buttons were not necessary.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AAsCGoGWvpM/VSVScV7mK7I/AAAAAAAAPeE/xmQWkwRD6QQ/s1600/6227298341_fc607507c4_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AAsCGoGWvpM/VSVScV7mK7I/AAAAAAAAPeE/xmQWkwRD6QQ/s1600/6227298341_fc607507c4_o.jpg" height="640" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WSsgDehhc5g/VSVSccvBtOI/AAAAAAAAPeI/fubrf1Ab5f0/s1600/10498182256_5e2fa49884_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WSsgDehhc5g/VSVSccvBtOI/AAAAAAAAPeI/fubrf1Ab5f0/s1600/10498182256_5e2fa49884_o.jpg" height="640" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
Another super cute pattern that I need to re-visit is the skirt from the Sunday Brunch pattern...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SSOkPP2Kr5U/VSVUjWpOT7I/AAAAAAAAPeY/mnYrbHF1LFk/s1600/6663538143_2500c80b9b_o(1).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SSOkPP2Kr5U/VSVUjWpOT7I/AAAAAAAAPeY/mnYrbHF1LFk/s1600/6663538143_2500c80b9b_o(1).jpg" height="640" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6eWGCDZW1hE/VSVUjvjBfiI/AAAAAAAAPec/eeBHBgd3bBo/s1600/8069187154_f81af3dcf8_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6eWGCDZW1hE/VSVUjvjBfiI/AAAAAAAAPec/eeBHBgd3bBo/s1600/8069187154_f81af3dcf8_o.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I have an idea to make this in a knit - I think my daughter would really love it in a comfy fabric. It's a great pattern!<br />
<br />
I've also sewed multiples of the 2+2 skirt - a great pleated skirt pattern - can't go wrong with a pleated skirt!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s_Ayq11noyY/VSVVPY31WQI/AAAAAAAAPeo/sxNa8JZCaBs/s1600/8017769559_abcc687578_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s_Ayq11noyY/VSVVPY31WQI/AAAAAAAAPeo/sxNa8JZCaBs/s1600/8017769559_abcc687578_o.jpg" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wu8qXnc5NbA/VSVVPTViJ-I/AAAAAAAAPes/qWqzfaWMSIY/s1600/9321737798_8d9945fdd5_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wu8qXnc5NbA/VSVVPTViJ-I/AAAAAAAAPes/qWqzfaWMSIY/s1600/9321737798_8d9945fdd5_o.jpg" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oyE0EntJ67A/VSVVPVvVekI/AAAAAAAAPew/n8YNUR1lzM0/s1600/14169638269_3ddf84979f_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oyE0EntJ67A/VSVVPVvVekI/AAAAAAAAPew/n8YNUR1lzM0/s1600/14169638269_3ddf84979f_o.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
It seems as if I rarely pair the skirt/top from the same pattern - which really shows you that the Oliver + S patterns are very versatile and can be paired up any way you like. My daughter wore the skirt from the Clippers outfit to death - she really liked it!<br />
<br />
Last, but not least, was a kind of bold-colored corduroy Music Class skirt - another ingenious pattern that I need to re-visit!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BQS2taXTXYs/VSVWjAT4HAI/AAAAAAAAPfE/Uo3TFw_FsTc/s1600/8065084188_634a5d200b_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BQS2taXTXYs/VSVWjAT4HAI/AAAAAAAAPfE/Uo3TFw_FsTc/s1600/8065084188_634a5d200b_o.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So, I've not made all the Oliver + S skirts - I don't own the Badminton Skort pattern (no clue why!). I took advantage of the discount code offered to buy a Hula Hoop skirt pattern. And, I own, but have never made, the Swing Set skirt (although I've made the top). <br />
<br />
So, pop back over to the <a href="http://skirtfixation.com/" target="_blank">Skirt Fixation</a> blog, and enter to win Oliver + S patterns and gift certificates to the Fat Quarter Shop! And don't forget the discount code for the Oliver + S site - I know I didn't!<br />

<br />
Well, I bought that pattern. Never made it. <br />
<br />
Then, the <a href="https://urban-sew.com/category/collections/elizabeth-tula-pink/" target="_blank">Elizabeth Line from Tula Pink</a> arrived. What to do with a beautiful portrait of a 16th century Queen Elizabeth? Well, put it right in the middle of my 5 year old's chest, what else!<br />
<br />
We will be taking a quick trip to the east coast in a couple of weeks, and my daughter's wardrobe is not ready for this. I decided to make this pattern in tunic length out of a fairly substantial knit - <a href="https://urban-sew.com/product/ponte-de-roma-double-knit-magenta/" target="_blank">magenta ponte de roma double knit</a> from the shop. I'm SO happy with my decision....<br />

<br />
She likes it, and already got unsolicited compliments from her father and older sister, so success!<br />
<br />
Note on the pattern - this is a size 4 with three inches in length added. She can definitely wear this for at least a year, I'd imagine.Janice http://www.blogger.com/profile/15516765600724614193noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6413098244817537843.post-85637937281945313552015-02-16T20:22:00.001-08:002015-02-16T20:24:21.685-08:00February Free-For-All - Popover Sundress InspirationWelcome to visitors from the <a href="http://www.francessuzanne.com/" target="_blank">Frances Suzanne</a> blog - what a great idea they had to showcase free patterns!! <br />
<br />
Where do you get inspiration for your sewing?<br />
<br />
I *used* to rely heavily on the now near-dead Flickr website. When I started sewing for my youngest, I got tons of inspiration there - I "favorited" items to document where I'd like to go with my sewing. When I started a new creation, I'd go there to see what other people had done with similar patterns. I joined groups, made friends.<br />
<br />
Then, Flickr pretty much died.<br />
<br />
Now, I get lots of inspiration searching Instagram. But, unless people hashtag correctly or in a predictable manner, it's tough to really keep track of what you like. I've never been much of a Pinterest person. So, when I signed on to showcase a free pattern, I - of course - chose an Oliver + S pattern, then went back to my old friend, the Flickr group. A group of folks who do seem to still hang with Flickr are the O+S people - which is a good thing.<br />
<br />
I chose the <a href="http://oliverands.com/free-patterns/popover-sundress/" target="_blank">Oliver + S Popover Sundress</a>. Even though this is a free pattern, it includes all the high quality finishes you expect from an Oliver + S pattern, including a bonus doll pattern. Little things like a beautifully finished yoke, and a reminder to iron down your stitches to set them really set Oliver + S patterns apart. In my opinion!<br />
<br />
I had made this previously for a charity event making dresses to send to Haiti, but never for my child. When I'm searching Flickr for inspiration, I search first the pattern name within the group, then refine by "interesting". Who knows exactly how Flickr determines interesting, but it definitely gives you good results.<br />
<br />
When I searched the Flickr pool for the Popover Sundress, I found some interesting trends. It seems like some of the most popular sundresses were:<br />
<br />

<li> made from large scale prints</li>
<li> made from plain fabric, with lace inserted in the yoke</li>
<li> made from a border print or applique</li>
</ol>
<br />
So, in the spirit of trying to be interesting, I made 3.<br />
<br />
Here's my large scale print...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pHnQ3DDWTwQ/VOJ1s7ILeUI/AAAAAAAAPE0/LB5iFFkDQL8/s1600/DSC_0374.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pHnQ3DDWTwQ/VOJ1s7ILeUI/AAAAAAAAPE0/LB5iFFkDQL8/s1600/DSC_0374.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZAhfx6E-V2k/VOJ1tRw_MxI/AAAAAAAAPE8/EQrrsUXpB3g/s1600/DSC_0390.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZAhfx6E-V2k/VOJ1tRw_MxI/AAAAAAAAPE8/EQrrsUXpB3g/s1600/DSC_0390.jpg" height="640" width="424" /></a></div>
For this version, I used some very interesting Kokka double gauze from <a href="https://urban-sew.com/product/kokka-world-map-blue-double-gauze/" target="_blank">my shop</a>. I shortened it into a tunic. Since this was a woven, I decided to try a size 5. Probably a bad decision. I used foldover elastic for the straps - a good decision. However, this particular FOE was a bit too narrow. Still, in spite of the pitiful look on my child (stomachache) she does really like this top. A lot.<br />
<br />
Here's a phone picture later in the day to prove it! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DWbyvmppzLU/VOLA5jm0MFI/AAAAAAAAPFU/ygXckQ4AQ3U/s1600/20150216_155637.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DWbyvmppzLU/VOLA5jm0MFI/AAAAAAAAPFU/ygXckQ4AQ3U/s1600/20150216_155637.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I was struggling for inspiration for a border/applique version. Then, sadly, I got inspiration from my old dog Luther. Luther went to doggie heaven this past weekend. A very, very tough weekend in our house. I decided to do a black lab version of the Popover Sundress - more for my benefit than anyone else's. (If you'd like to see photos of Luther in his heyday, you can check my photo website here: <a href="http://www.harrisdigitalpix.com/galleries/animals/7/">http://www.harrisdigitalpix.com/galleries/animals/7/</a> - Luther is the black lab mix.)<br />

<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
For this version, I used some more fabric from <a href="https://urban-sew.com/product/ponte-de-roma-double-knit-white/" target="_blank">my shop</a> (yes, more shameless promotion!!) - a ponte de roma double knit. Seriously great fabric, seriously great to work with. Since the Kokka top turned out big, I sized down to a size 4 with 6 length. This one worked perfectly. Until......the kid put it on and FREAKED OUT about the ties at the shoulders. No, those are NOT going to work for her. After the photos, I cut off the ends of the ties. She seems to be ok with it.<br />
<br />
Last, but certainly not least, I made a basic black dress from more <a href="https://urban-sew.com/product/ponte-de-roma-double-knit-black/" target="_blank">ponte de roma double knit</a> with some very nice organic lace from <a href="http://organiccottonplus.com/collections/notions-lace" target="_blank">Organic Cotton Plus</a> at the bodice. Really, this dress can go anywhere. For this version, I used a wider foldover elastic - much better.<br />

<br />
Julia wore this black dress out to dinner tonight - at the restaurant, she told me that she wants more dresses like this - oh yeah, success!<br />
<br />
Thanks to Ashley and Emily for asking me to participate - such great inspiration from a bunch of very talented bloggers!<br />
<br />Janice http://www.blogger.com/profile/15516765600724614193noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6413098244817537843.post-8434856235968737782015-02-09T18:58:00.000-08:002015-02-16T07:50:42.957-08:00Cloud 9 Voile - A Pleasant Surprise - And A Teeny Give-AwayWell, Kid's Clothes Week passed with me doing exactly one hour of embroidery on the very last day. Hmmm....life getting in the way again.<br />
<br />
I received some delicious fabric from <a href="http://organiccottonplus.com/collections/wovens-voile-batiste-whisper/products/voile-45-lunada-bay" target="_blank">Organic Cotton Plus</a> - some voile from Cloud 9. Organic fabric - need I say more? Well, I had never sewn with voile. In fact, I don't even think I had ever felt it before. It's a beautiful weight - lightweight, but not so light that it's difficult to sew. It's like a cotton lawn, but a bit lighter weight. I did line the body of this dress using voile as well.<br />
<br />
It took me an entire week to decide what to make with this fabric - after all that thought, I came up with the Playdate Dress from <a href="http://oliverands.com/product/OLV-OS007PD.html" target="_blank">Oliver + S</a>. One of their oldest patterns, but a very lovely one. I made two previously - <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/janice4839/7869200442/in/photolist-cZnH3G-cZnHbo-cZnH8G-fcJkRo-fcJkTd" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/janice4839/8263263094/" target="_blank">here</a>. The first was made from quilting cotton - rejected by the kid. The second was made from stretch velvet - much loved by the kid. You just never know....plus, how much longer will she want to wear pretty dresses? Next year, school uniforms for sure. Ugh.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qfS3z2mXpPE/VNlwsGXrCyI/AAAAAAAAPDc/4wxziFVJexc/s1600/DSC_0056.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qfS3z2mXpPE/VNlwsGXrCyI/AAAAAAAAPDc/4wxziFVJexc/s1600/DSC_0056.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This is a straight up size 5. I haven't made her any size 5's yet, but she is 5 years old....I think size-wise she is more like a size 4 with a 6 length, but I'm a very lazy sewist. I was hoping that this would fit her for a while, but looking at the length, I'm sure she'll outgrow it length-wise fairly soon. She's still at like 41 pounds - I think she's been the same weight for a year!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vblkUlqUhqY/VNlwrSopufI/AAAAAAAAPDY/nwTz3IjU63M/s1600/DSC_0060.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vblkUlqUhqY/VNlwrSopufI/AAAAAAAAPDY/nwTz3IjU63M/s1600/DSC_0060.jpg" height="640" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
Really, the yoke on this pattern just slays me...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HhnfAt62DPo/VNlwrzXk3SI/AAAAAAAAPDk/b-FoRdjRKjs/s1600/DSC_0061.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HhnfAt62DPo/VNlwrzXk3SI/AAAAAAAAPDk/b-FoRdjRKjs/s1600/DSC_0061.jpg" height="640" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
I absolutely agonized over the decision to put flat piping under the yoke, or lace. I also got some absolutely beautiful cotton, organic lace from <a href="http://organiccottonplus.com/collections/notions-lace" target="_blank">Organic Cotton Plus</a>. After playing with it, and thinking about it, I like my decision to just let the embroidery and the beautiful fabric stand for themselves. The lace will be used in another project, very soon.<br />

<br />
After doing some research on the fabric, and the fabric designer, I realized that Lunada Bay, the name of the fabric, is about a ten mile drive from me in Rancho Palos Verdes! Now, if I were a really good blogger, I would have taken a road trip there for photos....<br />
<br />
So, here's the teeny give-away - I have a good 3/4 of a yard left of this lovely fabric. If you'd like to try it out, just leave a comment. I'll choose a random winner by Valentine's Day. I'll send mail to anywhere...<br />
<br />
And, by the way, the kid *says* she loves this dress.....we will see!<br />
<br />
<br />
**********And the giveaway winner is Mikea Gray from Gray Colors - chosen by the very scientific method of the child pulling a number out of a hat! <br />
So far, I've kept a resolution. Yes, I have!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n5FCs-bXVDk/VMGISzieJ6I/AAAAAAAAOoo/mjRjAkHEds0/s1600/DSC_0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n5FCs-bXVDk/VMGISzieJ6I/AAAAAAAAOoo/mjRjAkHEds0/s1600/DSC_0001.jpg" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>

I made a shirt for me!!!<br />
<br />
(Photo credit to the 5 year old)<br />
<br />
I used the <a href="http://oliverands.com/liesl-and-co-patterns/OLV-LC007WM-D.html" target="_blank">Metro T-Shirt</a> from Liesl & Co. The fit is so perfect. I'm so, so happy. Ridiculously happy in fact. So happy I'm even sharing the crappy photos....<br />
<br />
Another resolution - make a Christmas gift each month. Well, the next project I completed may end up being a Christmas gift:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kv3ABL1vwF0/VMGJBIUYZVI/AAAAAAAAOo4/RZeTUQiMVB4/s1600/DSC_0007.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kv3ABL1vwF0/VMGJBIUYZVI/AAAAAAAAOo4/RZeTUQiMVB4/s1600/DSC_0007.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the <a href="http://swoonpatterns.com/shop/rosie-crossbody-bag/" target="_blank">Rosie Cross Body Bag</a> from Swoon Patterns. There's a zipper pocket on the back side. There's actually supposed to be one inside as well, but I mucked up the directions and decided against it. I absolutely had to use this sheep fabric from <a href="http://urban-sew.com/product/cosmo-textiles-sheep-flowers-black/" target="_blank">the shop</a> - it's a Japanese fabric from Cosmo Textiles. I don't know.....something about those sheep! I also used some vintage piping from the stash - I got it an estate sale and just adore using something that has the original price of 15 cents on it.<br />
<br />
Also, this month, in kind with the "buy no clothes for the kid" resolution, I completed a UFO that's been on my table since before Thanksgiving:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-83XHKjTLAPk/VMGKZWhb7qI/AAAAAAAAOpA/l63yPFLMUhQ/s1600/DSC_0966.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-83XHKjTLAPk/VMGKZWhb7qI/AAAAAAAAOpA/l63yPFLMUhQ/s1600/DSC_0966.jpg" height="640" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iWb-W-OLSlc/VMGKZjR_s4I/AAAAAAAAOpM/UE9iQFzhrIY/s1600/DSC_0977.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iWb-W-OLSlc/VMGKZjR_s4I/AAAAAAAAOpM/UE9iQFzhrIY/s1600/DSC_0977.jpg" height="640" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ebbzJKWtxqg/VMGKZnaK4-I/AAAAAAAAOpE/b_sXWAJRoUY/s1600/DSC_0987.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ebbzJKWtxqg/VMGKZnaK4-I/AAAAAAAAOpE/b_sXWAJRoUY/s1600/DSC_0987.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
The top is a modified Oliver + S Field Trip Raglan T-Shirt. I did this modification previously - I added a lined hood from another pattern, and a kangaroo pocket and cuffs and a waistband. The top is velour that I've probably had for about 10-15 years, and the leggings are leftover from gymnastics leotard sewing. So, seriously, an outfit made from "vintage" shall we say fabric?<br />
<br />
Julia wore this to school the day after I made it for her. At the end of the day, she came out and told me that one of her friends told her she looked like a clown. We had a good discussion about listening to other people's opinions, and being yourself, etc. So, I was very happy when this outfit came out of the laundry again and she chose it to wear to school. Good girl.<br />
<br />
I'm happy with my progress on my resolutions so far!!! At least the sewing-related ones....Janice http://www.blogger.com/profile/15516765600724614193noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6413098244817537843.post-88489778035691497682014-12-31T10:25:00.001-08:002014-12-31T10:42:49.753-08:002015....Sewing PlansWhen you feel like you haven't accomplished much during a year (sewing-wise), make a collage like these....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MDY5rG17mDo/VKQ7NtOTI3I/AAAAAAAAORk/xUWOs0B8DFo/s1600/15901682100_54923ef3c2_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MDY5rG17mDo/VKQ7NtOTI3I/AAAAAAAAORk/xUWOs0B8DFo/s1600/15901682100_54923ef3c2_z.jpg" height="320" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GGvtfURNBrQ/VKQ7NlMHHnI/AAAAAAAAORg/EYY8I7W6bno/s1600/16122415071_b833a4a0b4_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GGvtfURNBrQ/VKQ7NlMHHnI/AAAAAAAAORg/EYY8I7W6bno/s1600/16122415071_b833a4a0b4_z.jpg" height="640" width="457" /></a></div>
When I look back at 2014, I see some definite trends. I added bag-making to my repertoire. Surprisingly, I'm actually enjoying it. I'm using patterns mostly from <a href="http://swoonpatterns.com/" target="_blank">Swoon Patterns</a>. There's a very active Facebook group associated with this pattern designer, and it certainly makes it more fun to join in.<br />
<br />
Of course, my <a href="http://oliverands.com/" target="_blank">Oliver + S</a> sewing continues to dominate. It really helps when you can buy a pattern, and sew it up in your best fabric and be sure it will go together well, and fit the way it's supposed to. Unfortunately, I made a bunch of the same patterns over and over again. Which leads to my resolutions.<br />
<br />
I am joining in with a bunch of other folks at <a href="http://sew-not-perfect.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Sew Not Perfect</a> in their goal to "Sew Your Pattern Stash 2015". There are monthly themes, which will kind of force me to make some of these lingering (in my head) projects that haven't been done. For example, month 1 is "Women". Why, when I have no clothes barely, do I not sew for myself? There's a ton of excuses - big people clothes use up way more fabric than little people clothes, I'm not comfortable with fitting myself, etc. etc. Mostly, for work, I wear jeans, construction work boots. I do need some tops - generally, I wear very comfortable knit tops from Target - when they fall apart, I just buy a new round. I'm pretty darned sure that I can make myself a knit top. I have the <a href="http://oliverands.com/oliver-and-s-patterns/OLV-LC009FP-D.html" target="_blank">family t-shirt pack from Oliver + S</a> - seriously, why have I not made one of these? So, that's on my sewing agenda for month 1.<br />
<br />
So, without further ado, here's my 2015 grand plan:<br />
<br />
1. Make something on the agenda for "Sew Your Pattern Stash 2015" every month<br />
2. Try very hard to make a Christmas gift every month<br />
3. Make a project with my embroidery machine every month<br />
4. Don't buy the child any clothes<br />
<br />
I know I can accomplish #1. #2 and #3 are more iffy. #4 should be no problem. I did buy her some clothes for Christmas, but really for the most part, everything she wears is either a hand-me-down, something I made, or something that someone else gifted her.<br />
<br />
If you're interested in joining in the Sew Your Pattern Stash 2015, here's the list of the projects:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
